The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me!

I’ve finally got round to starting a blog after a mere two years of studying Veterinary Medicine & Surgery. I’m proud to say (and in ways somewhat surprised) that I’m still enjoying it!

So, why am I doing this now?

If I’m honest, actually starting this blog tonight was due to some pretty severe procrastination. Anything to get out of labelling another yellowed, blurred iPhone photo of another feline ovary down a microscope.

Thinking back, I really wanted to start this diary before I got to University. I was the only student in my year at school looking to study VetMed, and I was keen to try and lend a hand to future pupils hoping to follow in my paw prints. There wasn’t very much out there on the internet to guide me, so I learnt a lot of it for myself – both good and bad, as you can imagine.

Disclaimer: I’m also not really sure what to write about or indeed how to write it, but I hope I’ll develop my own style eventually once I’ve got into the flow of things!

No really, why?

So, I suppose the aim of this diary is to (I’m going to give bullet points a go now… is that a style?):

  • Give a little advice to prospective vet students on what to expect at University.
  • Hopefully entertain you with some of the weird and wonderful things.
  • Help you experience the “feels” about some of the more gloomy moments (there aren’t too many of those though… so far).
  • Educate people, both “vetty” and “non-vetty”, on some interesting topics in Veterinary Medicine.

Here’s a fun fact to kick-off with!

Historically ‘veterinary medicine’ has been around for centuries, but it was only in 1966, as part of the Veterinary Surgeons Act, that it was made so only licenced professionals registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) could perform veterinary medicine and surgery as we know it today. What I want to know is, who was doing surgery before!?

I know. You’re hooked already! Fingers-crossed you stick with me. I would be interested to hear from you if there’s something in particular you’d like to know about. Perhaps you’d like to pop your e-mail down below to get notifications when I post another entry? But don’t hold your breath – it’s taken me 3 years to write this one!
